This encompasses studying what users of these search engines get to see on the result pages, how users interact with search engines, and the effect both have on knowledge acquisition in society. Our research combines search engine data analysis, by collecting and analysing data from commercial search engines (data science), with understanding information-seeking behaviour through conducting user studies in different settings (information science), ranging from large, representative online surveys to behavioural studies in the lab employing, amongst others, eye-tracking.

- ZeitschriftenartikelSQLValidator – An Online Student Playground to Learn SQL(Datenbank-Spektrum: Vol. 21, No. 2, 2021) Obionwu, Victor; Broneske, David; Hawlitschek, Anja; Köppen, Veit; Saake, GunterThe Structured Query Language (SQL) is the most widely-used language in database-related courses. As a consequence, writing SQL queries is a fundamental expectation from any university course in database systems. Practical exercises are an essential part of the SQL learning experience. These exercises enable participants to practice and acquire experience in the use of the different SQL concepts, such as clauses, predicates, and expressions. To this end, we developed the tool SQLValidator as a web-based interactive tool for learning and practicing SQL. Apart from using it for teaching, we also use it to administer questionnaires and practice tests to improve students’ learning experience. In this paper, we present the architecture and functions of SQLValidator. In order to assess the usefulness of SQLValidator, we monitor the performance of our students based on the semester activities and examinations. Our evaluation shows that SQLValidator is an effective tool that improves a student’s learning experience when learning SQL.
- ZeitschriftenartikelToolunterstützung für den Übungsbetrieb in der Datenbanklehre: Erfahrungen mit der Software Praktomat(Datenbank-Spektrum: Vol. 21, No. 2, 2021) Ehrlinger, Christina; Fritsch, Thomas; Fruth, Michael; Lehner, Franz; Scherzinger, StefanieIn diesem Artikel berichten wir über den erstmaligen Einsatz der Software Praktomat im Rahmen einer einführenden Datenbankvorlesung an der Universität Passau. Unser Ziel war es, den ca. 300 Studierenden aus Informatik und Wirtschaftsinformatik während des „Corona-Semesters“ die Möglichkeit zu bieten, Anfragen in relationaler Algebra und SQL im Selbststudium zu üben und dabei automatisierte Rückmeldungen zu bekommen. Insbesondere wollten wir kein neues E‑Learning-System von Grund auf implementieren, sondern auf einem bestehenden, quelloffenen Werkzeug aufsetzen. Wir beschreiben in diesem Artikel die notwendigen Anpassungen der Praktomat -Software, ursprünglich für die grundständige Programmierausbildung konzipiert. Wir evaluieren den Zufriedenheitserfolg unserer Studierenden und berichten weiter anekdotisch über die Erfahrungen der Studierenden und Lehrenden.

We present results of an evaluation of a practical course in which students are assigned 15 queries within 6 tasks that they execute on four different database systems. The pedagogical aim of this course was to show conceptual differences between data models, difficulties that can occur when trying to formulate queries in different query languages, as well as specific system behavior. We evaluate the practical course based on a questionnaire that recorded the students’ performance on each task for each DB system.
