- ZeitschriftenartikelDie kritischen Erfolgsfaktoren für EDI-Dienstleistungsanbieter(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 44, No. 1, 2002) Alpar, PaulThe potential of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has not yet been fully realized despite the existence of appropriate standards and technologies. Service providers in this area play an important role as providers of the infrastructure, providers of conversion programs, or consultants. This paper examines the critical success factors of EDI service providers as perceived by them and their customers. It finds that the views of these groups are partly divergent, especially with respect to the need for knowledge of business processes. The findings can help providers to improve their services for their own benefit and the benefit of their users.

- ZeitschriftenartikelDas BONITAS-System(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 44, No. 1, 2002) Haase, Paul-Gerhard; Nastansky, LudwigTool support for professional credit-rating is currently dominated by data-oriented approaches. This results in primarily focusing on hard facts in the financial institutions’ process of evaluating credit inquiries of their customers. Content objects and arguments which cannot algorithmically be mapped onto rigid data-tables („soft facts”), however, with the potential of having a decisive impact on credit assessment, tend to be not sufficiently and appropriately placed into consideration. The BONITAS system overcomes this structural lack of information processing in traditional credit management systems in adding to the traditional approach innovative groupware-enabled capabilities. Compound documents in a messaging context are used to be integrative containers for all relevant information. These documents support both information gathering and evaluation of „hard” data and „soft” facts as well as semi-structured information gathering workflows allowing for a continuum of assessment-specific process options. The creation of valid and marketable business knowledge in credit management processes is basically team-driven. Thus, the essential features of groupware-based information management systems, i.e. their outstanding capabilities in communication, collaboration and coordination, represent critical baselines for improving the decision quality in credit-rating. An important goal of the BONITAS system is to aim at creating a constantly improved knowledge base on credit management workflows. This knowledge base is continuously being maintained in the operational progress of customer projects. It enables the financial institution to judge on the financial strength of upcoming clients in a holistic and anticipating evaluation process superior to traditional much more static assessments.

- ZeitschriftenartikelKooperierende intelligente Softwareagenten(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 44, No. 1, 2002) Kirn, StefanThis paper introduces to the reader the field of cooperating intelligent software agents. It first reviews the historical roots of Distributed AI, and the main concepts that have been developed in that field since the end of the seventies, and on which today’s agent technology is based upon. The paper then concentrates on the modeling of agents. Starting with a terminological discussion of what agents are, and with an example the main characteristics of cooperating intelligent agents are presented, formalized, and discussed. Based upon this the paper proceeds to issues that are relevant to multiagent systems: coordination, communication, and standardization. The paper concludes with a sum-up of the main results, and an extensive bibliography.

Its main components are the recording and management of multimedia data (i.e. image, video and text data) in a database system, semi-automatical analysis tools for images and videos, and a graphical user interface (GUI) integrating all tools and components applied in media research.

- ZeitschriftenartikelXML als Integrationstechnologie bei Informationsanbietern im Internet(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 44, No. 1, 2002) Rawolle, Joachim; Ade, Jochen; Schumann, MatthiasThis paper explores the use of XML for integrating content and applications for internet publishers based on a case study from the media industry. After a short introduction into the general conditions of the project the paper describes the most important requirements that were to be met with regard to the interfaces between the content management system and a set of external, partly interactive applications (like a search engine and discussion groups). Subsequently, a mechanism based on XML and HTTP is presented that was implemented as a solution within the scope of the project. Finally, experiences gained during the course of implementation and operation are confronted with the requirements as defined earlier in order to asses the strengths and weaknesses of XML-based integration mechanisms in similar settings.
