- ZeitschriftenartikelConcept maps to enable interdisciplinary research in cross-domain fusion(Informatik Spektrum: Vol. 45, No. 4, 2022) Hundsdörfer, Marie; Kröger, Peer; Kuhn, Annegret; Oppelt, Natascha; Peters, Isabella; Wiemers, Lisa MarieA sound basis for an interdisciplinary dialogue is highly important for cross-domain fusion (CDF) dealing with knowledge transfer between working groups situated in different research disciplines. In this paper, we present a literature-based concept map as one example to start an interdisciplinary dialogue between disciplines for the showcase of the concept “coast” and illustrate how such a concept map can be used to explicate various computer science challenges and provide inputs for CDF. We use the strengths of a concept map to display gathered knowledge and perspectives, and hence view the different disciplines have on “coast” and further highlight inter- and intra-categorical connections between several disciplines. With this example, we also want to point out the importance for the understanding of data originating from different disciplines and to raise awareness about the various methods and models that provide data and information for CDF approaches.
- ZeitschriftenartikelConfidence-driven communication of process mining on time series(Informatik Spektrum: Vol. 45, No. 4, 2022) Koschmider, Agnes; Oppelt, Natascha; Hundsdörfer, MarieThe combination of machine learning techniques with process analytics like process mining might even significantly elevate novel insights into time series data collections. To efficiently analyze time series by process mining and to convey confidence into the analysis result, requires bridging challenges. The purpose of this article is to discuss these challenges and to present initial solutions.
- ZeitschriftenartikelData-driven analysis and prediction of norm acceptance(Informatik Spektrum: Vol. 45, No. 4, 2022) Krestel, Ralf; Kuhn, Annegret; Hasselbring, WilhelmThat norms matter for politics is a widely shared observation. Existing political science research on norm diffusion, norm localization, and contestations is, however, constrained due to methodological manageability of empirical data. To face this research challenge, we propose an interdisciplinary research collaboration between political and computer science. Using the show case of energy politics, we want to conduct unsupervised and semi-supervised content analysis and fusion with the help of automated text mining methods to analyze the influence of different types of so-called norm entrepreneurs on the public acceptance and, respectively, contestations of different energy policies.

- ZeitschriftenartikelGetting the big picture in cross-domain fusion(Informatik Spektrum: Vol. 45, No. 4, 2022) von Hanxleden, Reinhard; Biastoch, Arne; Fohrer, Nicola; Renz, Matthias; Vafeidis, AthanasiosA central promise of cross-domain fusion (CDF) is the provision of a “bigger picture” that integrates different disciplines and may span very different levels of detail. We present a number of settings that call for this bigger picture, with a particular focus on how information from several domains can be made easily accessible and visualizable for different stakeholders. We propose harnessing an approach that is now well established in interactive maps, which we refer to as the “Google maps approach” (Google LLC, Mountain View, CA, USA), which combines effective filtering with intuitive user interaction. We expect this approach to be applicable to a range of CDF settings.

- ZeitschriftenartikelOutlier quantification for multibeam data(Informatik Spektrum: Vol. 45, No. 4, 2022) Ziolkowski, Tobias; Koschmider, Agnes; Kröger, Peer; Devey, ColinThis paper discusses the challenges of applying a data analytics pipeline for a large volume of data as can be found in natural and life sciences. To address this challenge, we attempt to elaborate an approach for an improved detection of outliers. We discuss an approach for outlier quantification for bathymetric data. As a use case, we selected ocean science (multibeam) data to calculate the outlierness for each data point. The benefit of outlier quantification is a more accurate estimation of which outliers should be removed or further analyzed. To shed light on the subject, this paper is structured as follows: first, a summary of related works on outlier detection is provided. The usefulness for a structured approach of outlier quantification is then discussed using multibeam data. This is followed by a presentation of the challenges for a suitable solution, and the paper concludes with a summary.
