- KonferenzbeitragA Common Reference Model for Environmental Science Research Infrastructures(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Chen, Yin; Martin, Paul; Magagna, Barbara; Schentz, Herbert; Zhao, Zhiming; Hardisty, Alex; Preece, Alun; Atkinson, Malcolm; Huber, Robert; Legré, YannickIndependent development of research infrastructures leads to unnecessary replication of technologies and solutions whilst the lack of standard definitions makes it difficult to relate experiences in one infrastructure with those of ot hers. The ENVRI Reference Model, www.envri.eu/rm, uses the Open Distributed Processing standard framework in order to model the "archetypical" environmental research infrastructure. The use of the ENVRI -RM to illustrate common characteristics of European ESFRI environmental infrastructures from a number of different perspectives provides a common language for and understanding of environmental research infrastructures, promote technology and solution sharing between infrastructures, and improve interoperability between implemented services .
- KonferenzbeitragA pre-market service to map biomass potentials on a regional level(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Tum, Markus; Günther, KurtIn the framework of the EU FP7 project ENDORSE (Energy Downstream Services Providing energy components for GMES) a pre-market service is developed to estimate the annual above ground biomass increase for forests in Germany. This development is driven by the requirements of a prime user (Forest Competence Center Eberswalde) and done in close cooperation with experts in the field of forestry. One aim of the service is to develop a cost and time efficient method to deliver yearly estimates of above ground forest biomass increase using satellite measurements and modelling techniques as the BETHY/DLR SVAT model. Another aim is to use mainly satellite observations coming from GMES services and/or GMES space components. Our yearly estimates of above ground forest biomass increase covering the time span from 2000 to 2012 will fill the gaps of the national forest inventories. In Germany the first and second National Forest Inventory (NFI) took place in the years 1987 and 2002 while the third inventory was performed in 2011 and 2012. This large-scale ground mapping of the forest status and forest productivity uses random sampling of forest parameters for the entire territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. The new pre-market service allows monitoring forest growth on a regional level with 1km x 1km spatial resolution with respect to local meteorological conditions
- KonferenzbeitragA quantitative study on transport time for sustainable road freight logistics(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Froese, JanReferring to the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU), road freight transport will increase by 80% between 2004 and 2025. In order to reduce the negative environmental effects freight transport needs to be arranged more sustainably in future. Although rail and water transport is less climate-damaging than road freight, companies hesitate to relocate road freight transport to more environmentally friendly modes because these are slower. But at the moment it is not proven to what extent the majority of customers actually require the fastest possible delivery for their orders. In case longer transport times are accepted in the market, rail and water logistics would be an attractive and sustainable alternative. In this contribution more than 5000 freight transport orders handled in continental Europe have been analyzed in terms of time constraints given by the customers. It can be concluded that there is a significant amount of road transport which could be handled in a slower and more sustainable way. To do so, it is crucial that future transport management systems are able to identify non time-critical orders and support a modal shift.
- KonferenzbeitragA Webbased application for crowdsourced acquisition of species data in the UNESCO MaB Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Gülden, Christian; Mattern, Michael; Fischer-Stabel, PeterThe world network of nature reserves has remarkable high natural values (high ecological integrity, high biodiversity, limited human use, rather unstressed systems, resource management is not extractionoriented, etc.) and high cultural values. Especially the UNESCO biosphere reserves comprise ecosystems and people, thus reflecting the human dimension in the environment. It is a network founded upon principles of maintaining biological values while sustaining human populations. In addition, Biosphere reserves serve as laboratories for research and demonstration of ways in progressing towards sustainability of human-environment interactions (including wise-use and economic development). In addition, Biosphere reserves are part of an UNESCO interdisciplinary research program that examines the environmental, social and economic dimensions of biodiversity loss in order to conserve biological and cultural diversity. This is being achieved by providing models of land management and sites of excellence for sustainable development research, environmental monitoring, education and training. To achieve this for the biosphere reserve Bliesgau, it is necessary that a dialogue between environmentalists and the general public will take place to raise awareness of this particular region. The goal is to accomplish this with the help of a web based application that concentrates on featured species, makes them known and encourages the public to take an active part in the preservation. The users can look up detailed information about these species or even interactively assist by seeking these and register them in a map inside the application and provide important information on their finding and the locality. In this way, not only the distribution of the species is mapped, in addition, the people are incorporated into the project Biosphere Bliesgau.
- KonferenzbeitragAC4DC – Adaptive computing for dynamic data centers(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Leukroth, Steffen
- KonferenzbeitragAn OGC Web Processing Service for assessing the quality of solar radiation measurements(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Espinar, Bella; Gschwind, Benoit; Wald, Lucien; Thomas, ClaireA service is presented that assesses the quality of measurements of daily global irradiation or means of global irradiance acquired by a ground station. Measurements are checked against models resulting in a measure of plausibility. This on-line service obeys the WPS (Web Processing Service) standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium. It is free of use and can be integrated into routine operations and Web portals thanks due its interoperability capability.
- KonferenzbeitragAnalysis of GIS data to investigate natural resource impacts of high-voltage overhead lines in the examples in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Thinh, Nguyen Xuan; Sander, Leon; Kopec, Jakob; Mühlnickel, KaiIn this paper we describe shortly Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia as study areas and the legal framework, both in the context of natural resource impacts of high-voltage overhead lines. We then conduct the buffer analysis of a GIS dataset in order to investigate natural resource impacts of existing high-voltage overhead lines in the two mentioned study areas. The paper is based upon the first results of the interdisciplinary research and development project "Power Network Planning" funded as part of the 6th Energy research program "Research for an environmentally friendly, reliable and affordable energy supply" by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).
- KonferenzbeitragApplication of the Simultaneous Modular Approach in the Field of Material Flow Analysis (MFA)(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Moeller, AndreasLife cycle assessment (LCA) and material flow analysis (MFA) are two important modelling instruments in the field of industrial ecology. Different scientific communities develop and refine the underlying concepts and instruments. However, it has been already shown that it is possible to combine MFA and LCA. LCA as well as MFA-based cost accountings become evaluation methods of material flow models. On the input side of this models it is possible to enhance them so that a simulation-based modelling framework can be implemented for the analysis of material and energy flows and stocks of production sites, supply chains, eco-industrial parks, regions etc. A specific MFA instrument has to answer two different questions: (1) what kind of data or information should be provided? In this perspective, the MFA instrument is an accounting system. (2) The second question is how to establish the material flow models (modelling and calculation). In particular, the aspect of modelling is discussed in this contribution. The paper makes clear that core algorithms to material flow analysis can be adopted from process flowsheeting approach in chemical engineering, especially the sequential modular approach and the simultaneous modular approach.
- KonferenzbeitragApplying Life Cycle Assessment within Discrete Event Simulation: Practical Application of the Milan/EcoFactory Material Flow Simulator(Proceedings of the 27th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2013) Reinhard, Jürgen; Wohlgemuth, Volker; Zah, Rainer; Jahr, PaulThis paper reveals the experiences of the application of a software tool that combines discrete event simulation (DES), material flow analysis (MFA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) in a single simulation model. This view focuses not only on economic optimization but also on material flow analysis opening the door to sustainable production in the future. Thus, the software unifies the economic and environmental perspective on a manufacturing system and therefore can be used for sustainable decision making. The paper will highlight important development phases, basic concept and important implementation issues as well as its practical application in the manufacturing industry.
