- KonferenzbeitragAn Active Tangible Device for Multitouch-Display Interaction(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Brauer, Christoph; Ariza, Oscar; Steinicke, FrankIn this article, we introduce an interactive tangible input device (TID) for touchscreens. Our approach complements a passive TID design by active microcontroller-driven features focusing on user-experience aspects. The TID provides battery-powered wireless operation, autonomous position sensing capabilities, visual and tactile feedback as well as multiple touch inputs and momentary buttons. The device can be accurately tracked in capacitive touchscreens, enabling novel interaction techniques for content selection and manipulation in 2D or stereoscopic tabletop environments, mid-air interaction is also supported by the use of IMU and short-to-mid-range distance sensors. Overall, we present a multi-purpose device which can be built using off-the-shelf-components, features a seamless firmware integration, Unity3D integration, and a 3D-printable body enclosure.
- KonferenzbeitragActive Tangibles for Tabletop Interaction based on the Kniwwelino Prototyping Platform(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Maquil, Valérie; Afkari Roshkari, Hoorieh; Moll, Christian; Hermen, Johannes; Latour, ThibaudTo allow researchers in exploring the use of active tangibles in different tabletop scenarios, affordable and easy-to-use rapid prototyping tools are needed. This paper presents the design and implementation of active tangibles that are based on a microcontroller based development platform called Kniwwelino. They are wirelessly connected via WiFi and can be programmed in Arduino or using a block-based visual programming language. We present the details of our implementation, propose a scenario of use, and describe our findings gained from the implementation of this scenario.
- KonferenzbeitragAdoption, Use and Diffusion of Crisis Apps in Germany: A Representative Survey(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Grinko, Margarita; Kaufhold, Marc-André; Reuter, ChristianThe research field of crisis informatics examines the potentials and limitations of information and communication technology in crises, disasters, and emergencies. Although ICT plays an increasingly large role in crisis response and management, in-depth studies on crisis apps and similar technology in the context of an emergency have been missing. Based on responses by 1024 participants in Germany, we examine the diffusion, usage, perception and adoption of mobile crisis apps as well as required functions and improvements. We conclude that crisis apps are still a little-known form of disaster ICT, but have potential for enhancing communication, keeping users up to date and providing a more effective crisis management as supplement to other media channels dependent on different underlying infrastructures. However, they should be adaptable to user characteristics, consider privacy, allow communication and offer valuable information to raise awareness of potential disasters without creating an overload. Also, the familiarity with and trust in crisis apps should be addressed to maximize their beneficial impact on crisis communication and management. We discuss further implications as well as directions for future research with larger target groups and specific usage scenarios.
- Konferenzbeitragaicracy: Everyday Objects from a Future Society Governed by Artifical Intelligence(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Hemmert, Fabian; Becker, Piet; Görts, Alexander; Hrlic, David; von Netzer, David; Weld, Christopher J.In this paper, we present aicracy, a critical design project that portrays a society ruled by an artificial intelligence. Five hypothetical objects from this society are presented: a bracelet that gives citizens feedback about their deeds, a patch that releases dopamine into its wearer's blood, an office chair that collapses when its user is unproductive, a shopping basket that displays different prices for different users, depending on how much they contribute to society, and a marble-based voting machine.
- KonferenzbeitragAMAP: A Visual Programming Language Based System to Support Document Image Analysis(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Rajan, Vinodh; Stiehl, H. SiegfriedRecently, Visual Programming Languages (VPLs) have been applied to a wide variety of domains ranging, usually for users lacking traditional programming skills. However, there have not been yet any concrete attempts to harness VPLs in the domain of Document Image Analysis (DIA), an applied-research field that tends to mainly cater to the needs of non-programmers. In this context, we introduce AMAP, a VPL-based system to empower non-programming users of DIA methods. We expound the motivation behind the system and briefly outline its design and development along with the architecture. We focus on showcasing several use cases that will demonstrate the system's ability to cope with different DIA scenarios.
- KonferenzbeitragDie Anwendung virtueller Tiefe von autostereoskopischen Displays für die Informations- und Interaktionsgestaltung von Desktop-Anwendungen(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Dettmann, André; Dittrich, Frank; Bullinger, AngelikaAutostereoscopic displays enable the perception of three-dimensional user interfaces without additional devices. This opens new fields of application, such as desktop applications at computer workstations. The article gives a summary of the state of the art on the potential of stereoscopic representations and discusses the use of depth for graphical software interfaces. The paper also presents the results of an expert workshop. Experts discussed task-specific design approaches for the presentation of three-dimensional information and developed various mock-ups. Additionally, three pointer-based interaction strategies were derived.
- KonferenzbeitragApplying Voting Methods in User Research(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Sageder, Julia; Demleitner, Ariane; Irlbacher, Oliver; Wimmer, RaphaelIn usability practice, it is often necessary to find a 'best' solution that is most suitable for most users. A common way to do this is to present multiple alternatives to a group of users and let them express their preferences. However, integrating many subjective ratings into one generally valid rating is non-trivial. For such data, voting methods from the field of *computational social choice* might prove useful. In order to investigate their suitability, we conducted an experiment where participants had to complete a pointing task using four different mouse acceleration values and rank the perceived performance of each option via Likert-type items and also by ranking them. For generating an overall ranking, we calculated arithmetic mean and median as well as Borda count and Schulze method for each of the response sets. All methods resulted in nearly the same overall ranking of options which suggests that they might be equally useful for generating consensus on a 'best' option.
- KonferenzbeitragAppropriating 3D Printers in Augmented Reality(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Jasche, Florian; Ludwig, ThomasDigital fabrication technologies, such as 3D printers, are receiving more and more attention, not only from professionals but also from hobbyists. However, even though people have easier access to these devices, 3D printers remain a black box for many users. To support the appropriation of 3D printers, this demonstration presents a system which extends a physical printer to include virtual components using augmented reality (AR). With these components, we try to explain how the printer works and allow the user to operate the printer through an AR application. We extend existing software with a custom solution to create a unique user interface and user experience. Our user interface provides a new way of inspecting models in AR before they are printed.
- KonferenzbeitragArmTouch: The Forearm as Touchpad for VR Control(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Tagungsband, 2019) Reich, Kristin; Jäger, Elisabeth; Do, Xuan Linh; Wolf, KatrinInteracting with elements inside a virtual reality (VR) experience is usually done with a controller. However, they tend to be clunky and cumbersome to use. We designed an alternative controller that allows for a rich touch interaction. Our prototype uses the forearm for touch input in VR. The forearm is easy to find through proprioception and also displayed through the HMD. We implemented two versions, one using a touchpad mounted at the forearm and one where the input is realized through touching only the skin of one’s arm. Users can select items of different menu types and through different gestures. A user study showed that both concepts show good usability, but none of the two touch mechanisms was preferred over the other.
