    App-gewischt!

Recommender Systems: Between Acceptance and Refusal
(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Neumayr, Thomas; Augstein, Mirjam
Recommender Systems (RSs) are a prominent solution to the problem of information overload on the web. It is impossible for users to process or even understand all information presented to them. Also, it becomes more and more difficult for an individual to identify appropriate concrete pieces of information or information sources. RSs aim at adapting the presented content and the order in which it is presented to users’ individual needs, based on their preferences and past behavior. Yet, a system can only provide accurate recommendations if it has been authentically used before, i.e., been able to collect information about a user. As authentic usage depends on a user’s acceptance, the success of RSs in general is strongly dependent on acceptance also. If recommendations seem inappropriate, the trust in the system will fade. This paper presents a study analyzing how and to what extent different factors like transparency or controllability influence acceptance in the context of web-based recommendation.

Spatial Grouping on Interactive Surfaces Bin & Blub
(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Höchtl, Anita; Geyer, Florian; Reiterer, Harald
This demo presents two interaction techniques for grouping items spatially on a tabletop interface. It allows participants of the conference to experience and compare the container technique Bin and the proximity technique Blub . While the container concept is similar to the folder concept on desktop systems, the proximity technique is a novel organic concept based on spatial proximity. Within an associated paper submitted to the main conference track, we studied the characteristics of both techniques in regard to grouping and regrouping performance, grouping strategies and use of multifinger input. Our study showed that more informal spatial techniques based on proximity are able to harness more benefits of direct-touch multi-finger and bimanual interaction. In our demo, participants will be able to compete in grouping items with both techniques.

TwisterSearch: Supporting Social Search with Tabletop and Mobile Displays
(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Rädle, Roman; Jetter, Hans-Christian; Reiterer, Harald
This demo presents TwisterSearch, a system for co-located and collaborative Web search that was designed in accordance with the canonical model of social search by Evans and Chi (2009). In a first phase before search, participants frame the context of the intended search and thereafter gather initial information requirements on a tabletop. These requirements are then refined through discussion and yield the foundation for the search task itself, which is performed in parallel on multiple mobile displays. These private devices are used to search the Web for evidence files and to populate the visual workspace of the tabletop with them. Moreover, the personal device allows both a highly parallel search as well as a tightly-coupled collaborative search, to enable seamless switching between collective and solitary search activities. In our TwisterSearch demo, participants can have a firsthand experience of these different individual phases of social search.

The World is Your Canvas: XL-Virtual Workspaces for Projector Phones
(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Kaufmann, Bonifaz; Hitz, Martin
Peephole interaction is a promising interaction technique for mobile projector phones. It allows the creation of extra-large virtual workspaces which contain more information than can be appropriately displayed on a small smartphone screen. In this paper we describe a projector phone prototype that implements peephole interaction without instrumenting the environment or using any additional hardware besides a smartphone and a handheld projector. This device allows for the first time to perform peephole interaction in the wild. Moreover, we demonstrate some applications we have built to exploit and investigate the full potential of peephole interaction with projector phones.

smARTbox A Portable Setup for Intelligent Interactive Applications
(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Fischbach, Martin; Wiebusch, Dennis; Latoschik, Marc Erich; Bruder, Gerd; Steinicke, Frank
This paper presents a semi-immersive, multimodal fish tank simulation realized using the smARTbox, an out-of-the-box platform for intelligent interactive applications. The smARTbox provides portability, stereoscopic visualization, marker-less user tracking and direct interscopic touch input. Off-the-shelf hardware is combined with a state-of-the-art simulation platform to provide a powerful system environment. The environment combines direct (touch) and indirect (movement) interaction.

CodingDojo: Interactive Slides with Real-time Feedback
(Mensch & Computer 2012 – Workshopband: interaktiv informiert – allgegenwärtig und allumfassend!?, 2012) Raab, Felix; Fuchs, Markus; Wolff, Christian
We present "CodingDojo", a presentation platform with interactive tools and real-time feedback elements that are controlled by a smartphone to be used in typical academic teaching contexts. The system provides tools for source code presentation, discussion and different types of coding challenges. CodingDojo was evaluated in a University course about good coding practices where traditional presentation platforms would be limited in functionality. We received positive user experience rankings and feedback from participants, suggesting that the system should be further developed and tested in other courses.
