    Designing The Technology For Pet Owners' Psychological Safety And Pet Physical Safety: identifying the challenges, needs and conceptualizing solutions for pet location tracking

    The scale of pet ownership significantly increased in last years, with 92.9 million dogs and 113.6 million cats estimated to be pets in Europe. The following research focuses on how pet location tracking technology design can support pet owners’ mental safety and pets’ physical safety during times of separation. Through participatory design consisting of mind maps, brainstorming and user stories, the target audience identified their primary concerns and developed solutions that an ideal location-tracking mobile app could provide including the mapping of the surroundings, social networks, safe zones or heat maps. The attendees’ insight showed that they anticipate a significantly more broad set of functionalities than just location itself. In the user stories participants expressed their perception of their mental safety in different scenarios of physical separation in case their pet was lost, they left the pet in one’s care or if they had to leave their pet in order to go to work. 29 out of 30 inputs concerning the feelings after using the ’ideal’ app were in the positive spectrum of calmness, happiness and feeling in control. We found that a well design location tracking app can reduce the anxiety and concerns of pet owners.

    Empowering Safety Technology for Women’s Solo Journeys: Insights from a Story Completion Study

    The growing trend of female solo travel has brought attention to the unique risks women face while travelling alone, such as sexual harassment and physical threats posed predominantly by men. Therefore this study explores how technology can be leveraged to improve solo women travellers’ physical safety. Through a series of workshops using the Story Completion method, 14 women with experience travelling alone shared experiences and ideas regarding concerns and chances of using safety technology. The results obtained through thematic analysis showed the need for devices that converge technological and non-technical assistance to address the threats women face when travelling alone, utilising authentication, location detection, and sensing technologies.

    Exploring Initial Interactions: High School Students and Generative AI Chatbots for Relationship Development

    This paper aims to provide recommendations for tech companies on promoting a positive student-AI relationship in high school settings, ensuring responsible and beneficial use of AI tools. The study explores the design considerations necessary to address concerns of overreliance and diminished critical thinking skills while harnessing the benefits of AI in education. By conducting a two-day study involving qualitative analysis of data from various sources, including word clouds, scale responses, group activities, chatbot interactions, interviews, and assignments, the research identifies common themes and perceptions. These insights lead to the generation of five need-based personas that represent student preferences and needs. The findings emphasize the importance of personalizing chatbot experiences based on individual student requirements and fostering positive attitudes towards AI adoption. The study highlights the need to address skeptical students and design chatbots that emulate supportive friends, enhancing engagement and trust. The conclusions provide actionable recommendations for tech companies to design AI-powered chatbots that facilitate personalized learning experiences and foster meaningful relationships in high school settings. By addressing the research aim, this study contributes to the development of effective strategies for promoting responsible and beneficial use of AI tools in education.

    Replacing TODO-Comments by Applying Hole-Driven Development to C#: A Proof of Concept

    Tightening the feedback loop while being able to quickly test new ideas allows programmers to stay focused. However, popular general-purpose programming languages do not provide short feedback cycles while implementing new features or fixing bugs. In this proof of concept, psychological foundations of complex problem-solving will be laid out, before the history and status quo of note-taking in programming is presented. After that, the concept of hole-driven development will be introduced. Combining these ideas will lead to a concept that enables programs that are executable, despite being incomplete. This allows programmers to gradually refine their mental models while being able to test their assumptions by already running potentially incomplete programs.

    Unleashing the Power of Wearable Technology: Enhancing Health and Adaptation for International Students in Transition to Germany

    International students encounter many challenges while relocating to a foreign country that impacts their mental and physical well-being, creating a cumbersome adaptation process within the new academic and cultural environment. We conducted a series of participatory design sessions with 20 participants from 10 countries to understand international students’ most pressing challenges during their transition to Germany and involve this population in the design process. We revealed the envisioned features of wearable technology as described by international students. Our findings indicate that the continuous accessibility characteristic of wearable technology can facilitate task management among students while also providing essential support for their well-being through monitoring physical and psychological parameters. Furthermore, integrating immersive technology with wearables emerged as a frequently requested addition, enhancing real-time connectivity and assisting students with navigation.

    SustainTourism – Experiencing Tourism From Home

    Tourist travel contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, but exploring alternative forms of tourism is limited. Virtual tourism ofers a possible solution but is often limited to seeing other places and its added value still needs to be explored. To understand the experiences and needs of virtual tourists, we conducted a Cultural Probe study with 28 participants. Key insights from this process were to conceptualize tourism experiences as a process rather than a one-of moment, engaging all the senses or allowing to connect with locals. Based on these insights, we iteratively developed SustainTourism, an app-based platform that connects virtual tourists with experiences curated by locals. The platform guides users through a multi-day process, from anticipation to individual experiences and moments of remembrance. Our next steps involve studying the impact of SustainTourism on virtual tourism experiences and exploring additional ways to meet virtual tourists’ needs.

    Haptic Journey: The integration of gesture-controls and mid-air haptic feedback into ticket machines to foster better hygiene in public spaces

    Since the outbreak of Covid-19, hygiene is a major issue, especially in public spaces. One example are public ticket vending machines (TVMs). With their contactless interaction, gesture-controlled interfaces offer a valid alternative to touchscreens and haptic buttons, which are still widely used in current machines. To explore the impact of mid-air haptic feedback combined with gesture-control we conducted interviews, an online survey and a usability study to measure user experience and user satisfaction. Our results show that hygiene plays a major role in public spaces. Furthermore, gesture-control combined with mid-air haptic feedback has the potential to provide more hygienic interaction that enhances user experience and usability compared to traditional TVMs.

    Exit Violence: Comparing Usability of Physical and Visual Alarm Buttons in SOS App in the Context of Domestic Violence

    This study investigated the effectiveness of SOS apps in supporting domestic violence victims, specifically examining the activation process through visual user interface (UI) and physical UI. Using a roleplay method and interviews, participant preferences and behaviours were assessed. Participants used an Android phone with an SOS app, activating it through either visual UI or physical UI. While participants displayed similar behaviours and visually focused on the screen for both methods, a strong preference for the physical UI was observed. Despite no significant behavioural differences, participants expressed higher satisfaction and perceived efficacy with the physical UI.

    HapTech: Intelligent controls in public spaces through mid-air haptic interaction

    Recently, public spaces have seen a shift towards touch-free interaction to address hygiene concerns. HapTech, a prototype of a gesture-controlled interface with mid-air haptic feedback, offers a solution. It allows users to control essential functions like lights and HVAC without physical contact. To understand the impact of visual user interfaces, a Wizard-of-Oz study was conducted. The findings suggest that while including a visual UI improves self-explainability, it also leads to longer task completion time and errors. Striking a balance is crucial, emphasizing simplistic UIs for intuitive gesture language and optional visual feedback. This optimization enhances touch-free interaction and overall user experience in public environments. We conclude that the inclusion of a visual user interface influences gesture choice and task completion, but it plays a pivotal role in improving user experience and self-explainability.

    Durchführung von HCD-Prozessassessments gemäß ISO/FDIS 9241-221

    ISO/FDIS 9241-221 (finaler ISO-Entwurf) enthält ein Prozessassessmentmodell zur Bewertung der menschzentrierten Gestaltungsprozesse (engl. „human centered design“ (HCD)-Prozesse), welche in der ISO 9241-220 definiert sind. Nach einer kurzen Einführung in die Grundlagen von Assessments, wird der Ablauf von HCD-Assessments und die Bewertung der HCD-Prozesse gemäß ISO/FDIS 9241-221 vorgestellt und anschließend in kleinen Gruppen zur Anwendung gebracht und anhand von konkreten Projektbeispielen und HCD-Prozessen in konkreten Assessmentsituation (abhängig von der Anzahl und dem Erfahrungshintergrund der Teilnehmenden) durchgespielt und gezielt eingeübt.
